Is it all right to e-mail thank-you notes for parties?
Yes, I think itâs just fine⦠Some people take a dim view of this practice, but it makes sense in this technological age. Why not? After all, itâs the message, not the medium. Itâs what you say and how you say it that pleases the recipient. You can also e-mail thank-you notes for birthday presents, but for wedding presents, you should probably send a formal thank-you note. If youâve had dinner at a friendâs house the night before, there is nothing wrong with e-mailing a bread-and-butter letter. And itâs much more likely that an e-mail will actually be written and sent than a letter that has to be folded, put into an envelope, and stamped.
Sympathy notes should be handwritten, because in most cases, although not all, the person to whom you are writing might be hurt by what is perceived as a hurried and not genuinely compassionate note.
If you save your e-mail into files and onto a backup disc, you will have a journal of the events of your life that your grandchildren will be able to read, in chronological order. And thatâs a pretty gratifying legacy. Okay, so itâs not a villa in the South of France or an annual invitation to the Academy Awards and the Vanity Fair party afterward where all the biggest movie stars in the world gather to check out each otherâs dresses and husbands, but itâs something to do on a rainy afternoon.
